AMY GOODMAN TO RECEIVE EDGERTON AWARD
ON MARCH 18TH!

Among the honorees at our 45th annual Bill of Rights Awards Luncheon will be Amy Goodman, a true voice for the protection of civil liberties over the airwaves and beyond.

The upcoming Luncheon, being held at The Capital Hilton in DC, promises to be a most memorable event and one of the most exciting awards ceremonies in NCA history. Join us!

Our 2008 Awards Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, March 18th, at the Capital Hilton, 1001 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC (two blocks from Farragut North, Red Line or two blocks from McPherson Sq., Blue/Orange Lines). Luncheon and program start PROMPTLY at noon, and the program is expected to end at 1:30. A post-luncheon reception will follow from 1:30-2:30pm.

Journalist Amy Goodman, principal host and co-founder of Democracy Now!, the only national broadcast news show free of all corporate underwriting, will be honored with the 2008 Henry W. Edgerton Civil Liberties Award for her distinguished career as an active defender and supporter of civil liberties.

Amy Goodman acted as news director of Pacifica Radio Station WBAI-FM in New York City for a decade before she co-founded Democracy Now! The War and Peace Report in 1996. Her projected goal in creating Democracy Now! was to make dissent a commonplace occurrence in the United States. Free of corporate underwriting, the programs aired on Democracy Now! present a range of independent voices not often heard. Ms. Goodman has co-authored two books thus far in her career and has received numerous awards and accolades for her dedicated defense of civil liberties throughout the years.

With the unanimous recommendations of our Staff and Board of Directors, Ralph J. Temple will be awarded the Alan and Adrienne Barth Service Award for exemplary volunteerism and service on liberty's behalf. While this award honors Ralph for his volunteer work, he also served on the ACLU-NCA Board from 1964 to 1966, and 1984 to 1988, and served on the National ACLU Board of Directors from 1982 to 1985. He was Legal Director of the ACLU-NCA from 1966 to 1980, and also served as Executive Director in 1979. Since 2005, Ralph has acted as a member of the Board of Directors of the ACLU of Oregon and its Southern Oregon Chapter. We are honored to award Ralph Temple and pleased that he willingly shared his years of commitment to the service of our Affiliate! Funds raised at this Bill of Rights Awards Luncheon are used for the legal and public education work of the ACLU Fund of the National Capital Area, with a portion to the national ACLU Foundation for similar work nationwide. ACLU legal staff has, for example:

• Won changes in police practices

• Defended rights of residents, businesses and neighborhood associations to contact D.C. Government agencies without fear of lawsuit.

• Protected D.C. Firefighters' religious rights.

• Exposed FBI and local police spying on political and religious groups, such as the Quakers and Catholic Peace Ministries.

• Won release of documents detailing abuse at Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib Prison, elsewhere in Iraq, Afghanistan and worldwide.

• Fought for fair elections and voting rights nationwide, including re-votes not merely recounts when voters were wrongly excluded or obviously confused (e.g., West Palm Beach).

• Provided thousands of What to Do If You're Stopped by the Police cards in Spanish and English (even the police distribute them).
